Diplomatic relations were established between the two countries on 22nd of November 1996, and the ambassadors were exchanged between the two countries at the level of non-resident ambassador. The Embassy of the State of Qatar opened in Turkmenistan on 24th of December 2014.
The State of Qatar and Turkmenistan have commercial and economic relations but are not commensurate with their relations, economic penitential and natural resources. In 2013, the trade balance was in favor of Turkmenistan.
Following Gurbanguly Mälikgulyýewiç's victory in 2007 he became the President of Turkmenistan. He made an official visit to the State of Qatar in 2010. This visit contributed to the development of relations between the two countries.
In 2016, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar, paid a state visit to Turkmenistan, followed by an official visit to the State of Qatar in 2017 by His Excellency Gurbanguly Mälikgulyýewiç, where he met with His Highness the Emir of the State of Qatar to review the distinguished bilateral relations and the desire to enhance cooperation in the various fields between the two countries.
Recently, since Turkmenistan's independence, mutual visits between officials of the two countries have been intensified, reflecting the mutual interest between the governments of the two countries to enhance the cooperation relations between them in various fields of common interest. The State of Qatar and Turkmenistan have signed (17) agreements and memoranda of understanding, including the fields of politics, economics, trade, culture and sports, and they have been ratified.
